It is easy to lose yourself in the sheer number of music biopics that already exist or are currently in development. Having said that, every now and then we find one that really piques our interest. That is the case for the upcoming Elton John biopic, Rocketman, and it looks like the long-awaited film has become even more intriguing with the official casting of Kingsman: The Secret Service star Taron Egerton as the music icon.

Per a report from Deadline, Taron Egerton has officially signed on to play Elton John in Rocketman. The actor has been incredibly vocal about his desire to take on the part in recent months and after much speculation it looks like he has finally signed on the dotted line. This development comes after a recent change which saw Egerton step in for The Revenant actor Tom Hardy, who was initially set to portray the beloved singer.

Directed by Eddie the Eagle's Dexter Fletcher, Rocketman will aim to take a look at Elton John's life beyond the glitz and glamor. The film will follow him through his early years as an aspiring musician, and track his ascent to stardom, chronicling the trials and tribulations that occurred along the way and detailing the long-standing musical partnership he's had with songwriter Bernie Taupin. Weirdly enough, this is far from the only silver screen connection shared by Taron Egerton and Elton John, as the two both previously appeared in Matthew Vaughn's Kingsman: The Golden Circle, which debuted in theaters last year. The movie is being produced by Vaughn, John and David Furnish, and the script has been written by Lee Hall. Production on the biopic is expected to being this summer.

Of course, those of you who have kept up with Taron Egerton's career over the last few years likely already know that he could easily step into a role like this. In fact, the Kingsman star generated quite a bit of enthusiasm in 2016 when he provided the vocals for Johnny in Illumination's Sing and actually got a chance to sing his own version of an Elton John classic. Taron Egerton clearly has the chops to deliver an Elton John track in animation form. Now, it is a matter of waiting to see if he can do the same while actually playing the singer in live-action.

When an upcoming Kingsman film appeared on the release board for late 2019, it was an exciting prospect to catch back up with Taron Egertons Eggsy and Colin Firths Harry Hart after 2017s Kingsman: The Golden Circle. However, it was later confirmed that the film would be a prequel lead by an entirely new cast. So, will the spy team weve grown to love ever come back? Check out this update from writer/director Matthew Vaughn about Kingsman 3:

We've got to finish off the Eggsy and Harry relationship. The final chapter of their relationship needs to be told, which we've got ready to do, and I'm hoping to shoot that later this year or the beginning of next year. But this Kingsman (prequel) has been pushed back to February 14th for coming out, and so, yeah, as soon as that's done, we're looking forward to It's funny. As Taron was saying, he's looking forward to becoming Eggsy again, because emotionally it's a lot less draining.

Manners maketh man, and Matthew Vaughn is doing right by keeping fans in the loop with these words. As the filmmaker told Digital Spy, Kingsman 3 is in the works in addition to the prequel. The upcoming origin story to be titled Kingsman: The Great Game is being prioritized though, as it has a February 14, 2020 release date to make. Once the project, also written and directed by Vaughn, is complete, he plans to move over to the Kingsman trilogy closer right away.

Since The Golden Circle, Matthew Vaughn and Taron Egerton have collaborated again on the Elton John musical biopic Rocketman. Vaughn is a producer on the flick starring Egerton as the music icon. The connection between the back-to-back projects run even deeper, since Elton John himself had a memorable cameo in the spy sequel.

A ton of preparation went into Taron Egertons Elton John role, as he had to sing, dance and convincingly portray the musician, sometimes with the man himself in front of him. Its been an emotional yet rewarding experience for the actor to star in Rocketman, but it has made him even more excited to return to his more familiar role as Eggsy and conclude the story that launched his career back in 2014.

Since The Great Game takes place during World War I (approximately 100 years before Eggsy began his life as a spy), Taron Egerton will understandably not be in the film. However, the movie has rounded out a cast full of impressive talent including Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Matthew Goode, Gemma Arterton, Charles Dance, Daniel Brhl, Ralph Fiennes, Djimon Hounsou, Rhys Ifans and Stanley Tucci. Not much else is known about the Kingsman prequel, but it will reportedly serve as an origin story for the spy service.

Fans can now also look forward to some closure concerning Eggsy and Harrys story arcs established with the Kingsman movies, though well have to wait over a year (at least) before we see Colin Firth and Egerton return to these roles. In the meantime, you can catch Egerton in Rocketman this Friday, May 31.

This Rotten Week: Predicting Miss Bala Reviews

Its a light week of movies this time around with just one new title in wide release. All we get is a tourist whose trip to Mexico lands her in the crosshairs of both a drug cartel and the DEA. Get ready for Miss Bala.

Just remember, I'm not reviewing these movies, but rather predicting where they'll end up on the Tomatometer. Let's take a look at This Rotten Week has to offer.

Miss Bala probably isnt exactly the film that the Mexican tourism board wants getting out there. A young woman played by Gina Rodriguez takes an innocent trip south of the border only to end up deeply involved with the actions of a drug cartel. It looks flashy and slick, though I have some reservations about whether the story comes together completely.

Catherine Hardwickes directorial career has been all over the place. She kicked things off with the excellent (though sometimes tough to watch) Thirteen (81%), and had a decent follow up with Lords of Dogtown (55%). Then, of course, she went big budget and commercial with Twilight (49%). The last few years have seen her make much smaller flicks like Miss You Already (71%) and Plush (29%). The critical reception and tone of her movies run the spectrum. I think Miss Bala falls somewhere in the middle. While I think some critics will like the female empowerment angle to the action, and the original was reviewed well, I suspect others have issues with the story.

I had one hit and one miss last time around with the Rotten Watch. The Kid Who Would Be King (Predicted: 85% Actual: 86%) missed by only a single percentage point, and was a big critical success in general. I said in my writeup that I was a bit lucky to have some early reviews in on the movie that were overwhelmingly positive, as I dont think I would have trended the score that high based on the concept alone. But critics really took to the film - a modern day update to the Sword in the Stone from writer/director Joe Cornish.

Meanwhile, I didnt have any early reviews on Serenity (Predicted: 60% Actual: 22%), and it showed with the prediction falling well away from the mark. Critics panned Steven Knights psychological thriller about a fisherman on an island played by Matthew McConaughey. who is asked by his ex-wife (Anne Hathaway) to chuck her new, abusive husband (Jason Clarke) to the sharks. Reviews used words/ phrases like, terrible, infuriating mess, insane, wacky, and terrible to name a few. Critics really, really didn't like this one, and my prediction was way, way off.

Well be back next time around with The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part, Cold Pursuit, The Prodigy, and What Men Want. Its gonna be a Rotten Week!
