One Thing Zoe Saldana Liked About Infinity War That Wasnt Explored In The Guardians Of The Galaxy Movies

Avengers: Infinity War was chock full of characters and compelling stories, but perhaps no character's story was more emotional or important than Gamora's. The daughter of Thanos was the key to the Mad Titan finding and obtaining the Soul Stone, and this led to some moving moments between her and Peter Quill. More than the Guardians of the Galaxy films, we were able to see just how close their relationship was, and it was actually this exploration of their relationship that Zoe Saldana liked about Infinity War, as she explained:
I love the fact that [Guardians of the Galaxy director] James Gunn has always protected Gamora and Quill's relationship. But I thought it was really wonderful for audiences to see [in Infinity War] that the show that they put on [when other people are around] is not really what happens behind closed doors. That they really love each other, that they really listen to each other. That he actually is capable of making a promise and keeping it.
As Zoe Saldana told the Los Angeles Times, director James Gunn has done a slow build of Gamora and Star-Lord's relationship in the Guardians of the Galaxy movies, with hints of a budding romance, but never actually diving into it. We've seen the jokester Quill and the fierce Gamora butting heads, but the attraction has been undeniable, leading to a 'will they or won't they' situation for a while now. Zoe Saldana likes that Infinity War finally delivered on that build with a long-awaited kiss, showing audiences that these two characters are together and really do love each other, and all their bickering is really just a mask for their true feelings. We finally see what is beneath the surface of this relationship and how far these two will go for each other.
It makes sense that the relationship between Gamora and Star-Lord was more open in Infinity War than in the Guardians films too based on the fact that it takes place four years after the battle with Ego. A lot can happen in that time, so it's only logical that relationship has grown. While we've been waiting to see the kiss for some time, what's arguably more intimate and meaningful is what Gamora entrusts Quill with doing for her. Making him promise to kill her to prevent Thanos from getting her is incredibly emotional and tells us a lot about their relationship. Quill listens to her and, despite his objections, loves her enough to commit to it. When the moment of truth comes, while he initially balks, he loves her enough to carry out her wishes. But it's ultimately all for naught, leading to Gamora's death and Quill making a grave mistake in his rage.
The beautiful tragedy is that we finally got to see these characters together just in time for them to be torn apart. As for whether or not we will see this relationship explored more in the future, that's an open question. We assume that those killed by Thanos' finger snap will be coming back, but Gamora was killed before that, so you would think she is dead for good, but you can't be too sure. That will certainly make things interesting for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which is expected to hit theaters in 2020. If Gamora is dead for good, at least Infinity War gave Zoe Saldana's character a poignant and meaningful sendoff.
