What's Apparently Going On With Danny Boyle And The New James Bond Movie
Director Sam Mendes oversaw the last two movies of the James Bond film series, Skyfall and Spectre, but with Mendes announcing in 2016 that he won't be back for Bond 25, MGM and Eon Productions have been looking for someone new to helm Daniel Craig's last outing as 007. Yesterday, the news came out that the latest frontrunner for the job in Slumdog Millionaire's Danny Boyle. While it was reported that a formal offer hasn't been sent Boyle's way yet, supposedly Boyle is already crafting a Bond 25 story with one of his writing partners.
Supposedly Danny Boyle is currently working with his Trainspotting partner John Hodge to hash out Boyle's Bond 25 idea. If all goes well, this would be the James Bond movie that Boyle would direct. In its report, Deadline compared the creative endeavor to how Quentin Tarantino is working with The Revenant writer Mark L. Smith on his idea for an R-rated Star Trek movie.
It will be another couple months before Hodge finishes his Bond 25 script, and from there, one of two things will happen. If MGM and Eon like what Hodge wrote, then they'll set aside the Bond 25 story that was written by Neal Purvis and Robert Wade (who also penned Casino Royale, Skyfall and Spectre), and Boyle will be on board to direct the movie. However, if MGM and Eon decide to stick with Purvis and Wade's script, then Boyle won't direct Bond 25, and the companies will continue searching for a new director. Last summer, it was reported that Denis Villeneuve, David Mackenzie and Yann Demange were in consideration to helm Bond 25, though Villeneuve later removed himself from the running due to being busy with Dune and other projects. Christopher Nolan also recently confirmed "categorically" that he won't helm the next James Bond adventure.
Both Trainspotting and its 2017 sequel, T2 Trainspotting, were met with numerous positive reviews, so if Danny Boyle and John Hodge are indeed cracking a Bond 25 story together, then it's a good bet that it will be something interesting. Since this will be Daniel Craig's fifth and final time playing James Bond, it's important that his tenure end with a bang, and these men might have the right kind of creative vision to make that happen. Fun fact, even if Danny Boyle scores the Bond 25 directing gig, this won't be the first time that he's directed something involving Daniel Craig's James Bond. Boyle helmed the opening ceremony of the 2012 Olympics, and part of that saw Craig's Bond in an action scene where Queen Elizabeth II cameoed.
Bond 25 is scheduled to hit theaters on November 8, 2019, so stay tuned to CinemaBlend for more updates on the movie's development, including whether or nor Danny Boyle will be the one directing it.
