The Great Advice Black Panther's Ryan Coogler Gave The Captain Marvel Directors

Taking on an MCU film is a massive undertaking for any director. They have a lot of eyes on them, high expectations from Marvel fans, and blockbuster budgets well over $100 million. That puts a lot on the line for the studio if the film doesnt do well. So no pressure at all for Captain Marvel directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, right?

Captain Marvel is the highest-profile movie the writing/directing partners have ever developed together, by far. Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck have worked together for years on 2006s Half Nelson, 2010s Its Kind of a Funny Story, and 2015s Mississippi Grind, but orchestrating a superhero origin flick is an entirely different animal. They knew this too well, and looked to past Marvel directors for some advice. In Flecks words:

I think the best piece of advice besides [the Russo Brothers] was Ryan Coogler. When we were just starting to have conversations with Marvel -- deciding if it was a fit for us, if we wanted to do this movie -- he was prepping Black Panther, and we wanted his opinion on what the process was like. And he said 'It is so challenging and so difficult that you have to make sure that you love this character and you love this story, because you're going to be spending a lot of time with this character and story over time.' That was great for us. We realigned how we were approaching pitching the movie to Marvel. It stopped becoming 'What do they want to hear from us?' We stopped trying to make the movie we thought they wanted and started pitching the movie we wanted to make.

This is great advice from Ryan Coogler! With the sheer amount of elements and details that have to come together in a Marvel film such as Black Panther and Captain Marvel, the director told Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck that they better be ready to offer up their blood, sweat, and tears for Carol Danvers if they wanted to come out on the other side of it proud of their work.

In the writer/directors' recent interview with Spot Philippines, they also talked about the role the Russo Brothers played in preparing them for Captain Marvel. In their words:

Anna Boden: They did give us words of advice. We visited them on the set of Infinity War.Ryan Fleck: Joe and Anthony [Russo], they were so helpful to us. They were giving us advice on things we wouldnt even think we needed advice on. It was great, theyre great collaborators. Theyve made four of these movies now, and theyre just good guys and great directors.

The Russo Brothers have arguably made the most pivotal contributions to the MCU by directing Captain America: Winter Solider, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War and the highly-anticipated installment that comes just over a month after Captain Marvel, Avengers: Endgame.

Before starting on Captain Marvel, Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck got to see what its like to make a Marvel film in action on the set of Infinity War. Im sure this got their gears turning about all the particulars that go into filming an MCU movie, which certainly looks different than directing a drama.

When Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck were hired for Captain Marvel, Kevin Feige said they were picked because they had an amazing way of talking about Carol Danvers and talking about her journey." The Marvel Studios chief said the pair's lack of experience on the big-budget action front wasn't a concern because Marvel has a huge team with experts who know what theyre doing. What was more important was how Boden and Fleck understood the character and how they wanted to tell her story.

Why Star Wars Fans Think Snoke Might Be Coming Back

One of the most shocking things about Star Wars: The Last Jedi was the fate of Supreme Leader Snoke, but, while he may be dead that doesn't mean he's gone for good. Fans are now wondering is Snoke might be making some sort of return for Star Wars: Episode IX, as Andy Serkis, the man behind the motion capture, recently had to cancel an appearance at a local comic-con. It's possible the reason for the cancelation was that he was needed on set for Star Wars.

The recent Keystone Comic-Con in Pennsylvania just happened, and among its litany of guests was supposed to be Andy Serkis. However, at the last minute, Serkis backed out. It's not uncommon for a few guests at one of these sorts of events to be forced to cancel, but there's usually a specific reason for it, and quite often it's production responsibilities.

There's precedent for a comic-con cancelation being due to Star Wars, even recently. Billy Dee Williams had to do the same thing not that long ago, leading many to speculate that Lando Calrissian would be making a return in Star Wars: Episode IX. That speculation turned out to be accurate so it could be here as well.

Of course, there are numerous ways we could see Snoke again. The most obvious would be as part of a flashback. While many were disappointed that Snoke died in Star Wars: The Last Jedi without revealing to the audience his origins or motives, the fact is that Snoke doesn't need to be alive to for the next movie to give us this information. Kylo Ren could easily talk about his own history and reveal a lot about where Snoke came from. If this happens we could see a younger Snoke build the First Order as part of events that took place prior to Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

There's also the possibility that we could see Snoke appear as a Force Ghost. We've never seen a Dark Side Force user do that, but maybe it's possible.

Finally, there's a third option, which is that Andy Serkis could actually be playing an entirely different character in Star Wars: Episode IX. The actor was almost certainly put under contract for all three parts of the trilogy, but since Snoke's death doesn't appear to have been specifically planned before Rian Johnson wrote it, this makes Serkis available to do something else in the new movie. If there's a character in the film that requires motion capture, and you have the best in the game available, why not use him?

Of course, all this assumes that it was even Star Wars that pulled Andy Serkis away. Perhaps he needed to do some last minute work on Mowgli, his directorial effort on a live-action Jungle Book. It really could be anything, but it could very well be Star Wars.

For years now, Fifty Shades of Grey has encouraged its fans to engage in all manner of explicit acts, the kinds Anastasia Steele would refer to as "kinky fuckery." However, none of the Fifty Shades craze had really extended into The Cotswalds until Fifty Shade Freed star Jamie Dornan moved in there. Now, reportedly, some people have begun fulfilling their deepest desires to be like Christian and Ana in the woods near Dornan's house.

That's right, people are heading into the woods near Jamie Dornan's home and are reportedly acting out scenes straight from the screen, or the pages of E.L. James' novels. One of the residents living near Dornan told The Daily Star that people have always occasionally gotten down and dirty in the woods, and the location is even listed on a swingers website as a place with "lots of entrances and exits to the woods, great not to look too obvious." However, two years ago when the Fifty Shades Freed actor moved into the neighborhood, the fantasies reportedly ramped up.

In addition, they got more specific, as one person who spoke with the outlet mentioned their partner was walking in the woods near Stroud, Glos when he heard a couple fornicating in the woods. He also distinctly heard the woman calling her partner "Mr. Grey."

Jamie Dornan bought in The Cotswalds back in 2015. He dropped 1.75million on a large home that also includes a swimming pool and a tennis court. It is reportedly secluded and located in a swath of woods.

Although a lot of people clearly enjoy the story between Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele, in real life, Jamie Dornan has mentioned that he and his co-star Dakota Johnson are far closer to "brother and sister." He also recently explained that the sex scenes are a little less sexy to film than we might guess, as he and Johnson cover their private parts. He, in particular used a "wee-bag" that had previously been used on the set of a different film, which made filming the sex scenes even less sexy. And Dakota Johnson has also said the Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed scenes were filmed in quick succession, so it seems the production team got them out of the way pretty quickly.

Still, the chemistry on the big screen is pretty memorable, memorable enough for Universal to commission all three movies based on the books. If you'd like to see Christian and Ana back at their usual antics, the sexual thriller will hit theaters on February 9, and will feature a wedding, a honeymoon and more!
