The DC Universe is a very interesting place. While attempting to compete with the behemoth Marvel Cinematic Universe, DC has forged its own path in a few ways. Most notably, DC doesn't announce slates of films in advance a la the MCU's phases. As a result, there are a ton of announced projects that don't have concrete release dates or any guarantee they'll actually come to fruition. One of them is the Birds of Prey movie, which seems to be picking up speed in its development process. Margot Robbie return to play Harley Quinn, and will likely introduce the DCEU's version of Catwoman, Huntress, and Black Canary. Fans have been wondering who might take these roles, although a new report indicates that Lady Gaga might have been approached. Furthermore, the singer/actress reportedly turned two roles down.

This shocking turn of events come to us from Batman-News, which cited a tweet claiming that Lady Gaga had been offered up to two different roles in Birds of Prey. She was reportedly approached to play either Black Canary or Huntress three months ago, but turned down the role(s). But given her intense involvement in A Star Is Born and her recently announced Las Vegas residency, this shouldn't come as much of a surprise.

News of Gaga's Birds of Prey snub will likely be disappointing for all the DC fans out there, who are longing for more information regarding the upcoming female-led film. When the project was first announced years ago, fans immediately began debating who would be taking on the femme fatale roles in the upcoming blockbuster. Plenty of names have been thrown around in the past few years, although Lady Gaga has the most starpower by far. Unfortunately, it seems she doesn't want to make her superhero debut anytime soon.

This latest rumor, while unconfirmed, is pretty wild. Especially given the fact that Lady Gaga was reportedly given her choice of both Huntress and Black Canary. While looking at the pop star you might think she'd be best for Canary (I mean, she can use HER VOICE to fight off the bad guys), I actually think Huntress would have been a more fascinating choice for Gaga. Huntress aka Helena Bertinelli, is one of the most deadly members of the Bat-family. Unlike the Batman and Robin, Huntress is ok using more deadly force to take out the criminals of Gotham City. She also has a tragic story related to mob violence, which would be a meaty role for Gaga to sink her teeth into. Plus, she could have used her Italian-American roots to bring the character to life on the silver screen.

When you're writing a movie like Avengers: Infinity War, it's already enough of a balancing act to tell a story that contains scores of heroes interacting with each other in order to save the day. The same can be said for developing the villains in a given movie too, and this very subject has come from the various think pieces and audience comments that cited the apparent lack of developed backstory for Thanos's Black Order in Avengers: Infinity War. However, if you look at this summer's monster hit from a certain point of view, the lack of backstory makes perfect sense. Joe Russo in particular explained the lack of extensive Black Order action as a reaction to the following concern, noting,

I think people have been waiting 10 years to have the Marvel heroes together in a 2 and half hour film. So If I started to go into the history of them- that's a whole other movie altogether. Thanos is the true bad guy of the movie, you don't want the sub-villains overshadowing the super-villain.

From the standpoint of the audience who, whether they've seen Thor: Ragnarok or not, find themselves in the middle of what feels like an extension to that film's finale, it could be a bit confusing to see Ebony Maw, Proxima Midnight, and the rest of the Black Order appear out of nowhere with little to no context. So it may have felt like the hotly teased group of villains were somewhat random interlopers by time Avengers: Infinity War finally introduced them to the public at large. And yet, when you really think about the remarks above, they really don't need a huge prologue and/or introduction to fit into the story.

As Joe Russo told the audience of Iowa City High School, which was reported on by their Little Hawk Student Newspaper (via Pastebin), the focus of Avengers: Infinity War isn't the introduction of the Black Order, but moreso the fulfillment of the promise of conflict between Earth's mightiest heroes and the mad titan himself, Thanos. Ever since that first post-credits sequence that teased his desire to challenge The Avengers themselves, this inevitable match-up has been the endgame, with every step of the way leading toward Avengers: Infinity War's events. So in the grand scheme of the payoff that the film is trying to land, fleshing out something like the lackeys working in the name of Thanos actually seems kind of strange. Still, the Black Order being fairly easily bested was certainly something that was a concern to some of the fans --especially comics fans -- whilst commenting about the movie on this site.

Whether you see the Black Order as either a memorable side note or distracting excess to Avengers: Infinity War, neither of those outcomes spoil the film's plot in any way. So, if you can take or leave the children of Thanos, we're guessing you were still able to get behind the stakes of the biggest tug of war between good and evil in the MCU so far. If that's not the biggest sign that The Russo Brothers, Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeeley have done their jobs as a creative team correctly, then we don't know what is.

Why So Many Die Hard Knockoffs Don't Work, According To Skyscraper's Director

From the very beginning of the film's existence, many fans (and people involved with the movie) have drawn comparisons between Skyscraper and Die Hard. The Bruce Willis-fronted action classic remains a benchmark for the genre, and it's no secret that many films have attempted to use that formula in a variety of ways over the years. However, I recently had a chance to ask Skyscraper director, Rawson Marshall Thurber, why so many Die Hard knockoffs have failed, and he noted that too many of them have neglected to treat their heroes as real men. In our interview, Thurber explained:

To me, the one thing that the lesser Die Hard imitations have gotten wrong is they steal the wrong thing. Die Hard is great. It's about three jokes short of being a straight-up comedy. Alan Rickman is fantastic. Bruce Willis is fantastic. but what that movie is really about is a guy trying to repair his marriage. That's it. The key of that movie is when Bruce Willis is beaten up. His feet are bleeding. He's in that bathroom. He's talking to Al and he says, 'I want you to tell my wife something. She's heard me say I love you a hundred times, but she's never heard me say I'm sorry. You tell her I'm sorry.' That's what that movie is about. It's about a guy getting his wife back and at the end he does. He earns her love back. That's the mistake a lot of imitations or rip-offs of that movie make. They steal the action and the premise and the spectacle, but they forget the heart.

If you have seen Die Hard, then you likely already know exactly what Rawson Marshall Thurber is referring to here. It's the scene in which John McClane pulls the glass out of his feet and begins to accept the fact that he may not survive Christmas Eve to see his wife again. That's the core of what Die Hard is supposed to be, and as Rawson Marshall Thurber explained, a lot of the lesser Die Hard imitations eventually missed that point by copying the premise or the badass action without also imitating the human hook of the story.

Skyscraper seemingly learns from these errors by embracing a story about a man trying to get his family back in the face of an impossible situation.
