To 3D Or Not To 3D: Buy The Right Captain Marvel Ticket

Nick Fury sent out a mysterious and desperate page in the end-credits scene of Avengers: Infinity War and at long last we get to meet the hero he called out to in the eleventh-hour with his retrofuturist pager. Brie Larsons Carol Danvers is making her cinematic debut in Captain Marvel and getting us up to speed on her origin before she hopefully shows up to provide some support in Avengers: Endgame. And like all big screen superheroes, you can enjoy Captain Marvel in 3D.

Superhero movies with all their special effects and action are particularly well-suited to a 3D presentation and that holds true for Marvels first female-led superhero movie. As youve seen from the trailers, Captain Marvel has all kinds of action, from hand-to-hand combat to car chases to dogfights to space battles and that all makes it a very good fit for a 3D presentation. The only reason this is not a 5 is because the film isnt quite a brightly-colored feast as something like Thor: Ragnarok or an animated movie and it also has a fair amount that takes place on the ground that doesnt beg for 3D.

Captain Marvel may be a great fit for 3D, but I dont think this conversion was a huge priority for Marvel. Thats not to say that its bad, its just doesnt take full advantage of the format. The lack of images coming off the screen in particular was noticeable and there were no real standout sequences in the film where the 3D really shined. The fact that the live-action film did so well with the brightness is admirable, but it feels like Marvel just gave Captain Marvel a light dusting of 3D magic versus really taking the time to really make it dazzle. But maybe that was the intent.

This is the element of Captain Marvels 3D presentation that I found the most lacking, at least from a frequency of use perspective. I dont necessarily need objects, or in this case photon blasts, flying off the screen and into my lap, but I was expecting a bit more to take place in front of the screen than actually did. There were actually several instances where given the action that was taking place, I was anticipating a very noticeable use of this technology that would wow the senses but those moments passed without much 3D effect at all. Times when the environments and the action did stretch off the screen were done well, like during the third act and when Carol gets her powers, they just were few and far between compared to what I would expect for the material.

Many of the best uses of 3D, particularly in live-action, incorporate the technology to provide depth to the image, to make it feel as though you can walk through the screen to knuckle up a Skrull wearing an old lady suit along with Carol Danvers. Captain Marvel does this well, but it is not as pronounced as some of the very best uses of the technology. Marvel seemed to be going with a less-is-more approach. Focus is deep and crisp throughout, but the depth didnt quite reach the levels that the best 3D films do. What the depth of the image did do though was to give a nice punch to the image, making it really pop no matter what was on screen. Simply put, it looked good.

Live-action movies often falter in this category compared to their animated counterparts but I can happily say that Captain Marvel succeeds with flying colors. The image was bright throughout and I never found myself squinting or struggling with the dimming effect of the 3D glasses. There are a few notable scenes in Captain Marvel, particularly in the beginning and the end that are definitely on the dark side but, having seen the film in both 2D and 3D, I can safely say that the dark scenes in the 3D version are no harder to distinguish. Your mileage may vary of course depending on what type of 3D screening you see and the theater and projector itself. For what its worth I saw this in a premium format and overall I was quite impressed with the brightness.

Here is where the light touch of the 3D in Captain Marvel was particularly apparent. When you take your glasses off and the image looks blurry, that means a lot of image manipulation is taking place. When I took my glasses off periodically throughout different scenes in Captain Marvel, the image looked relatively normal other than the color shift. That means that the 3D effect was fairly minor. Given what I saw, you could probably watch the 3D presentation without wearing the glasses and you wouldnt have any trouble making out what is going on nor would you suffer from any eyestrain.

The score here in many ways reflects the implementation of the films 3D and for me personally, this was a smooth presentation. Despite Carol Danvers pulling absurd g-forces at times, no barf bag is necessary for Captain Marvel. The crispness of the image resulted in no real eyestrain. That and the subtle nature of the 3D effect, even during the fight scenes where the camera was moving everywhere, meant that I didnt feel any disorientation from the 3D. This is a subjective measurement but the 3D effect just isnt intense enough here to give problems and I would wager that people who usually get nauseous with 3D might be fine with Captain Marvel.

This is a tough movie to judge because the 3D wasnt bad; the 3D that was there was solid, there just wasnt a lot of it. It wont satiate the biggest lovers of 3D but it isnt diminished by the format as some conversions are. I dont think a 3D ticket is necessary for Captain Marvel in the way it was for the must see in 3D Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse or (I would argue) Alita: Battle Angel. If you do go to a 3D screening, especially in a premium format, I dont think youll be disappointed because the image quality was top notch with a bright presentation and nice depth. Captain Marvel just isnt a 3D movie, its a movie that happens to be in 3D.

This morning, just after midnight, the merger between 21st Century Fox and the Walt Disney Company became official. That meant that numerous franchises and characters have now joined the House of Mouse, and it looks like Deadpool could not be happier. Ryan Reynolds posted an image to his Twitter account commemorating the new era which shows Deadpool heading off to join his new bosses. Check it out.

The image shows Deadpool sitting in a classic yellow school bus, which happens to have the Disney name on it. The Merc with a Mouth is wearing the classic Mickey Mouse ears, which you figure have to be standard issue for all cast members of the Walt Disney Company. He looks like a little kid on the way to his first day of school, and for him I suppose it is. He needs to learn exactly what the plan is for him under this new corporate structure.

The film rights to the Deadpool character are officially in the hands of Marvel once again as the result of this merger. This creates an opportunity for Deadpool and his fellow mutants to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe, though it's unclear exactly how, or even if, such a thing would work.

Disney CEO Bob Iger had previously stated that he had no problem continuing to make Deadpool movies that continue to be mature titles. However, at this point the only project on the drawing board, an X-Force film that would include Deadpool as one member of a team, is maybe dead. Does this mean there's no place in the new Marvel for the old Deadpool after all?

It will probably be some time before we hear any major announcements regarding the future of Deadpool or any other of the major franchises that Disney just took over. There's a lot of work to be done and a lot of decisions to be made. Disney has to learn where the various in-development projects currently stand, decide which ones the studio wants to make a priority, which may not be identical to the way Fox felt, and which ones can sit on the back burner.

At the same time, it's also possible Disney already has a plan in place. The studio announced news Star Wars movies essentially concurrently with the announcement that it had purchased Lucasfilm. If Disney has decided it wants Deadpool to be an important part of the future, we could get a release date for X-Force or an official announcement that Deadpool 3 is coming literally any day.

If and when we do see Deadpool again, you can be pretty sure he'll be kicking down the fourth wall with numerous jokes about what it's like working for Disney now. The irony is just too much fun to ignore.

Balancing the R-rated version of Deadpool with the company whose name is synonymous with family friendly entertainment is clearly going to be a delicate matter. The character is incredibly popular and it seems unlikely Disney is going to want to say goodbye to the money that could be made. At the same time, don't expect to see Deadpool walking around Disneyland anytime soon.

One Big Concern We Have With The Halloween Reboot

Warning: this article contains spoilers for the original Halloween and plot details from the upcoming sequel. Don't read any further if you want to remain entirely in the dark.

The Shape will return to Haddonfield, Illinois later this year when David Gordon Green's Halloween finally premieres on October 19, and all eyes are on the Stronger director to do some phenomenal work with John Carpenter's horror universe. That said, there's one significant change that the Halloween reboot is making to the source material, and it has us concerned about where this film could take the Michael Myers world: Michael is in custody when the reboot begins. It might not seem like a big deal, but allow me to explain.

As many fans already know, the ending of the original Halloween is as mysterious as it is terrifying. Michael Myers corners Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) in the upstairs bedroom of a quiet Haddonfield home and begins to strangle her to death. Dr. Sam Loomis (Donald Pleasence) then appears out of nowhere (having seen the terrified children that Laurie saved running from the house) and empties his gun into Michael. The escaped psychopath falls from the upstairs window to the ground, below, and Loomis breathes a sigh of relief as he has finally killed his patient of 15 years. However, the victory is relatively short-lived, as Loomis looks down once more after comforting Laurie to find that Michael has (once again) disappeared.

What follows is a montage of every location that Michael stalked throughout the run of the original Halloween as John Carpenter's now-iconic music swells and the sound of his breathing gets louder and louder. Finally, the camera rests on the Myers house, and the screen cuts to black as the movie ends with no indication of where Michael has gone. Utterly creepy, and instantly iconic.

The issue with this ending is that the new Halloween, based off of the information that we learned about it at CinemaCon, is going to slightly alter that finale by revealing that Michael was actually taken into custody shortly after Loomis shot him. From there, the reboot will see him escape on the 40th anniversary of his initial rampage to see him venture back to Haddonfield for a showdown with Laurie.

Setting this film up in such a way undoubtedly makes exposition and table setting easier for the folks at Blumhouse, but it also arguably cheapens one of the best moments from the original movie. If we're to accept the new film's take on the story as canon, then that creepy breathing led directly to Sheriff Brackett and his deputies actually finding the masked killer. There will be no more mystery over where he went or how safe Laurie and Loomis are, and (because the reboot is ignoring the sequels) we know that he won't slaughter several more people at a nearby hospital. He just went back to Smith's Grove.

Am I saying that Halloween cannot tell a great story with this framework? Absolutely not. In fact, it's still entirely possible that this change will make the John Carpenter original work even better in retrospect. Having said that, Halloween will most certainly need to earn this change to the existing narrative, because as it stands now, the idea of Michael getting away and disappearing into the night remains one of the most iconic endings in movie history.
