How Finn And Captain Phasma's Star Wars: The Last Jedi Fight Originally Ended

Warning: SPOILERS for Star Wars: The Last Jedi are ahead!

From the beginning of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Finn and Captain Phasma have been on a collision course towards a major confrontation. That confrontation finally took place in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. After being betrayed by DJ and captured by the First Order, hope is seemingly lost for Rose and Finn, who are about to be killed. But thanks to Admiral Holdo's heroics and BB-8 continuing the proud tradition of droids saving the day, the Resistance heroes are given a stay of execution, which leads to Finn and Phasma comin to blows as Snoke's ship comes apart around them. Finn eventually gained the upper hand on Phasma, and after part of her helmet was destroyed, she fell into a fiery chasm. But the way this battle played out is actually the product of reshoots, as the original version of this scene was actually quite different.

Originally, Captain Phasma had Finn soundly beaten and surrounded by stormtroopers. There in a desperate moment, the two foes began talking, and Finn insultsed Phasma for her cowardice, bringing up how she helped lower the shields on Starkiller Base in The Force Awakens in order to save her own life. Phasma looked out through her damaged helmet as her subordinates are forced to endure the awkwardness of this moment. Then, before anyone can question her, Phasma blasts all of the stormtroopers. This allows for Finn to begin Round 2, which ultimately ended in Captain Phasma being hit by a blast that sends her into the chasm of the breaking ship. While this original version allowed for a bit more of a mental game between the characters, it ultimately didn't work in the film because of the pacing, as director Rian Johnson explained.

I really like the little moment of Phasma being caught and getting called out by John, and that little game of chess that they have. But we needed a much more condensed version of that scene, where essentially it's the same outcome.

It would have been cool to see this interaction to build the emotion between the Captain and her former pupil but I can see what Rian Johnson means. As he told Entertainment Weekly, the pacing wouldn't have worked. With a ship exploding and rebels on the run, grinding the story to a halt in this moment to let two characters have a little chat would have messed with the flow of the movie. We never saw the coercion that took place in The Force Awakens before Captain Phasma lowered the shields and was promptly and unceremoniously disposed of. Nevertheless, seeing a little more insight into Phasma's psyche to see how she reacts to having that shameful moment revealed would have been interesting. It also would have done a bit to humanize the character, who never got as much screen time as we hoped, before she reverted back to a cold, calculating killer, murdering her own men to save face.

Ultimately Phasma is still defeated, but her fate is actually a bit less certain in the theatrical version of the scene. In the original version, her death was more definitive, whereas now, along with Gwendoline Christie herself, we are still wondering what the character's future holds, if anything. Such decisions are probably up to J.J. Abrams now, but if she is to be brought back, it has to be for a good reason, and there needs to be a story to tell. With Episode IX coming next year, maybe Finn and Captain Phasma will clash again, and Finn will get another chance to reveal her true nature.

Jordan Peele's Reaction To Winning An Oscar Is So Relatable

After years of acting, particularly in the comedy realm, Jordan Peele took his career in a new direction when he wrote and directed last year's Get Out. As I'm sure most of you already reading are aware, the horror movie was one of the most critically lauded movie from last year, and that ultimately led to plenty of attention at the 90th Academy Awards. Well sure enough, Peele himself walked away with the Best Original Screenplay Oscar, and his reaction online afterwards is extremely relatable.

While Jordan Peele has won plenty of awards, including a Peabody in 2013 for his work on Key & Peele, this is his first Oscar, and it was for his his directorial debut! So yeah, we don't blame him for reacting this way on his Twitter page not long after winning one of those little golden trophies. I know if I won an Oscar for my first theatrical script, I would say something similar. During his acceptance speech, Peele acknowledged how much trouble he had cracking Get Out, but he eventually made it across the finish line, and it's a good thing he did. Because along with the world getting to see his vision on the big screen, now Peele has an Oscar he can proudly display in his home.

To say that Get Out was a cinematic success would be an understatement. Besides earning numerous positive reviews, it made $255 million worldwide off a $4.5 million budget, making it 2017's most profitable movie. Among the many accolades it's collected since it was released on February 24, 2017 (on top of the four Academy Award nominations) include two Golden Globe nominations, as well as winning two NAACP Image Awards and two Independent Spirit Awards. Get Out briefly returned to theaters last month for screenings that were free to the public, no doubt to squeeze in a little extra Oscars promotion before the big ceremony.

Jordan Peele said earlier this year that he's now retired from acting (and The Emoji Movie played a big part in that decision), but considering how well Get Out did, it's clear that he has a bright future ahead of him behind the camera. Peele hasn't announced what his next movie will be, though for now, he's staying away from big budget productions. Whatever Peele tackle next, if it's anywhere near as popular as Get Out (and has poignant social commentary ), then it's a good bet that he'll be getting recognition during the following awards season.

Why Emily Blunt Doesn't Actually Want A Devil Wears Prada Sequel

Emily Blunt is quite busy these days. She's currently out and about promoting the new horror movie A Quiet Place, and she has Mary Poppins Returns coming up later this year. However, what has seemed to be most on people's minds lately is whether or not Emily Blunt would be interested in a sequel to The Devil Wears Prada, the 2006 movie that really helped to kickstart her career. The actress recently explained on The Jess Cagle Interview that she wouldn't be out on a sequel if everyone else was in; however, there's a reason she doesn't really want The Devil Wears Prada 2 to happen. She said:

If everyone did it I would be up for it. I don't know if there's going to be a second film. I almost hope it doesn't because I think sometimes when you sequel everything [it] kind of dilutes how special the original is.

The Devil Wears Prada came out during a time period when rom-coms were still being made on the regular. It was also made during a time when most movies that came out were not setting up a sequel. Thanks to some wonderful performances by Emily Blunt, Anne Hathaway and the iconic Meryl Streep (not to mention Stanley Tucci), The Devil Wears Prada has lived on in the collective pop culture memory. So much so that Emily Blunt is still getting asked about the gig and whether she would do another, and she told The Jess Cagle Interview that she feels the original was "special" and stands on its own. She doesn't seem to want to really try to recreate the experience in a second movie in order to make more money off of a sequel.

On the bright side, if you've been gung ho about a sequel to The Devil Wears Prada ever since it came out over a decade ago, Emily Blunt doesn't totally say "no" here. She spoke out on Late Night with Seth Meyers a few days ago, and the actress said she "would love it" about making a sequel, also mentioning that her co-star Stanley Tucci is also now her brother-in-law. Now, she seems to have flip-flopped a little bit; however, she still says she would do a second movie if everyone else were down. So, all hope is not lost.

Although there a bunch of sequels, remakes and reboots in the works right now at the various movie studios, The Devil Wears Prada 2 is not one that is currently in development. As we've noted previously, Emily Blunt is quite busy this year, and if she wasn't so busy, the sequel she would probably be doing would be Edge of Tomorrow 2. In addition, Anne Hathaway has movies like Ocean's 8 and The Hustle coming. Meryl Streep also has Mary Poppins Returns and Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again coming out. Stanley Tucci has a slew of movies, including Show Dogs and Patient Zero, coming out. Still, unlike a lot of these other sequels, The Devil Wears Prada actually has a sequel already out there called Revenge Wears Prada. So there is source material to back this sort of movie. Plus, the thought of a second movie poster with a devilish stiletto front and center is tantalizing, although these days those heels are likely to be a bit chunkier...
