How On The Basis Of Sex Should Be Viewed With RBG, According To The Stars

As weird as it may seem, Ruth Bader Ginsberg had a big year on the silver screen in 2018. The Supreme Court justice was the center of two notable titles, albeit in two different mediums: the documentary RBG, and the biopic feature On The Basis Of Sex. It was funny to see them come out one after the other, but it begs the question: how should the two movies be watched together? Well, On The Basis Of Sex stars Felicity Jones and Armie Hammer, and writer Daniel Stiepleman have thoughts on that very subject, and recently shared them with me:

A few weeks ago, prior to the movie's limited release, I had the chance to participate in the Los Angeles press day for Mimi Leder's On The Basis Of Sex, and during my interviews with the actors and writer I asked them all the same question about RGB. They all had different responses, but the theme that was shared was that documentary is basically a sister-film.

For her part, Felicity Jones -- who stars in On The Basis Of Sex as Ruth Bader Ginsberg -- noted that the two features each have different goals simply because of their basic individual storytelling intentions. At the same time, though, they actually shared common ground in their research, as she explained:

They're very much partners to each other. I mean obviously a film and a documentary have a very different aim in many ways. But even when we were making the film I was constantly looking at footage that the documentary makers we're looking at. So they definitely come as a pair.

When posed with the same question, Armie Hammer noted that while both On The Basis Of Sex and RGB explore the life of the same subject, they go about it in very different ways. Specifically, the latter is much bigger in its "coverage," telling the story of Bader Ginsberg's entire career to date. Meanwhile, not only does the former focus more specifically on a single important case, it also allows audiences so see more of her in her personal and intimate life -- particularly with his character, Marty Ginsberg. Said the actor,

They're complimentary. They both cover the same woman, but in different aspects. The documentary, while it does deal with her personal life, also deals largely with her accomplishments in the Supreme Court, and also as lawyer. This is the story of the woman behind all that. So it fleshes out what you see in the documentary.

The fact that the two movies have this difference in scope was actually something that Daniel Stiepleman appreciated -- even more so because it prevented any redundancies in the storytelling. The On The Basis Of Sex screenwriter pointed out that the court case that's central to the narrative of the film - Moritz v. Commissioner Of Internal Revenue -- isn't actually featured in RBG, and it allows it to act as a more in-depth "origin story" for the legendary lawyer/judge. In his own words,

It's just a coincidence that they came out in such close tandem. But I think it worked out beautifully because our field was kind of a prequel to that film. What that film does so well is it tells the breadth of Ruth Bader Ginsburg's career at the ACLU and the cases she argued and how she argued them, and our story is sort of the origin story of how she became the woman who could go on to do all those things. I admit that when I saw the documentary the first time, I was so relieved to see that our case is not in that movie.

So how should RBG and On The Basis Of Sex be watched together? In what order should one do a double feature? Daniel Stiepleman feels that it might be best to watch Mimi Leder's film first, but added a caveat for anyone who has already seen the documentary:

I think because ours sort of chronologically comes first, I think it could actually could be more rewarding to see our movie first, but given that a lot of people probably already seen the documentary, I don't think you're going to lose out in any way.

Also starring Justin Theroux, Sam Waterston, and Kathy Bates, On The Basis Of Sex has been out in limited release for the last few weeks - but will very likely be heading to a theater near you this weekend as it expands into wide release. So find a copy of RBG, and get properly prepared for a perfect Ruth Bader Ginsberg movie marathon.

Glass Box Office: The Superhero Movie Wins Again During Dismal Weekend

With the exception of a few significant surprises in recent years, January-February has never been known as a big blockbuster season. In fact, it's reputation instead has always been as a dumping ground - a period of time when studios put out titles that are either poor in quality, or would fail to garner any significant attention at any other point in the year. That being said, looking at this week's numbers... oof. Hollywood seriously took one on the chin the past three days, as not a single film in theaters right now managed to make more than seven figures. This is now the third week in a row that M. Night Shyamalan's Glass has worn the box office crown, but there is very little to be proud of here. Of all the films in the Top 10 it had by far the steepest drop - down about 50 percent from last week - and it only managed to beat Neil Burger's The Upside by less than a million dollars (it being in its fourth week of release, and only dropping about 26 percent from last time around).

There is no question that the conclusion of the Eastrail 177 Trilogy is making money, but that doesn't mean there are a bunch of positive adjectives to be thrown around here. On a weekend like this, it basically won because there really wasn't much else to see.

As you can see, Glass should break $90 million in the next couple of days, but it's also getting ready to head past another significant benchmark internationally. More than 55 percent of the movie's grosses have been coming in from foreign markets, and that's resulted in a worldwide gross to date of $199 million.That's pretty damn good for a movie that was only made for a reported $20 million before marketing, but strangely enough the film still has a long way to go before it's rising in the franchise ranking from a global perspective.

Not only was 2017's Split able to make $278.5 million before it was done with its theatrical run, but Unbreakable made $248.1 million back in 2000. The new film should be able to top the first film in the series from a domestic point of view, as it's now only $7 million away, but overall it will likely be seen as the the least successful in the pack.

There was only one new wide release in theaters this past weekend - Catherine Hardwicke's Miss Bala - and obviously things didn't exactly go well for the film. The Sony release was reportedly made for an even smaller budget than Glass, about $15 million,, but that further emphasizes how weak this opening was (studios usually want their movies to make back more than a third of their costs in their opening weekend). CinemaScore apparently didn't do surveys for the thriller, so we don't have an entirely clear picture of how audiences reacted to the title, but what we do know is that professional critics were not fans. Only a little more than one in four writers gave it a positive grade, resulting in a 26% on Rotten Tomatoes.

With a proper push this could have been the film to take M. Night Shyamalan off of the box office top spot, but instead it had to settle for a depressing third place finish.

The one sorta silver lining this week is not a wide release, or even a new release, but instead the return of the Peter Jackson documentary They Shall Not Grow Old. The film - which features colorized and transformed World War I footage - got a very small but acclaimed release back in December, and the buzz and chatter that it generated resulted in a second wider release this past weekend. It didn't exactly crush, obviously, arriving in 10th place, but that's still pretty amazing for what the movie is. It's now made more than $10 million, which is enough to make it rank 30th on the all time documentary box office list.

This was clearly a piss poor week for Hollywood, but things should bounce back in a huge way over the next couple of weeks. This upcoming weekend, for example, has a quadruple punch hitting theaters, with the animated antics of The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part; a nice bit of horror with The Prodigy; Taraji P. Henson reading minds in What Men Want; and Liam Neeson killing people again in Cold Pursuit. All four of these titles should do a nice job shaking up the Top 10, so be sure to come back next week to see how it all turns out.

Bond 25, An Updated Cast List

Its hard to believe it has been four years since Spectre came out in theaters and it will be five years before the still-untitled Bond 25 comes out. For a short while we were on a fairly steady diet of Daniel Craig movies, with Skyfall and Spectre coming out three years apart and Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace coming out two years apart.

However, there was a four-year gap between Quantum of Solace and Skyfall, so I suppose we shouldnt fret too much about Bond 25 and how long it is taking to come together. On that note, casting is finally a reality for the new movie, which will bring Daniel Craig back, assumedly for the last time.

Daniel Craig as James BondYes, Daniel Craig is game for at least one more round as the famous British agent 007. The actor was confirmed to be returning in July of 2017 and has been allegedly working out like a fiend since then in order to whip himself into shape for his final hurrah.

He has said it should be his last time playing the iconic character and he would be open to any gender or race taking over the role.

Rami Malek as The VillainFollowing his star-making turn as Freddie Mercury, the Mr. Robot actor will be joining the Bond franchise in a currently-unnamed villainous role. Hes already spoken to fans with a first message about his inclusion into the cast.

Due to the fact the movie will be filming in Jamaica like Dr. No, some have speculated his character will be somehow related to that character or flick, but this has currently in no way, shape or form been confirmed. Stay tuned.

Jeffrey Wright as Felix LeiterThats Wright, the fan-favorite Westworld actor is returning to the Bond fold to play Felix Leiter in Bond 25. Like Rami Malek, this had been speculated for a while.

However, Barbara Broccoli and co. recently confirmed Jeffrey Wrights return for the first time since he appeared in Quantum of Solace (in a role that was ultimately cut down). Bonds friend is mentioned in Spectre and hell be back in this next film.

Ralph Fiennes as MTaking over for the former M played by Judi Dench, this Ms full name is Lieutenant Colonel Gareth Mallory. We know this because he was originally introduced in Skyfall as the head of the Intelligence and Security Committee.

Hell be back in Bond 25, although a month ago he said he still didnt have any details on the movie. Ultimately, M wont be the only MI6 character to be returning, either.

Naomie Harris as MoneypennyMiss Moneypenny is an iconic Bond character. In Daniel Craigs version, shes been given the first name Eve and has been played by Naomie Harris since 2012.

Her version was given some backstory in which she was once a field agent. She messes up royally in Skyfall during a mission in Istanbul and later is given desk work, but has occasionally taken on field work since. When last we saw her she was back in the office, so well have to wait and see where Bond 25 goes, particularly given the flick is shooting in Jamaica.

Lea Seydoux as Madeleine SwannMadeleine Swann, or rather Dr. Madeleine Swann, is the daughter of Mr. White, a member of SPECTRE. She had grown up resenting her father for his criminal dealings and it was those dealings that led James Bond to her.

She first pops up in you likely guessed it Spectre, and although she shares some moments with Bond, she has said in interviews that she doesnt really feel like a stereotypical Bond girl. This is likely one of the reasons shell be back for another round.

Ben Whishaw as QQ and Daniel Craigs Bond meeting for the first time is a highlight of Skyfall as the older British Agent realizes he will be dealing with a veritable youngster as his new quartermaster.

These days, Whishaw is nearing 40 (!) and is very much a major part of the Bond franchise popping in to confirm pieces of information and more. Hell be a welcome face when he comes back for Bond 25.

Rory Kinnear as TannerRory Kinnears big claim to fame in this franchise is playing the youngest version of Bill Tanner to exist.

Tanner is Ms Chief of Staff and Kinnears version first popped up in Quantum of Solace. These days, Bill Tanner is a regular fixture in Bond films, or at least this iteration of Bond films.

Dali BenssalahA French actor known for the Nox miniseries and Interrail, Dali Benssalah was confirmed to be joining the franchise during a recent press event for Bond 25.

We currently do not have details on who the actor will be playing.

Ana De ArmasLike Dali Benssalah, Ana De Armas will be a newcomer in the Bond universe. The Cuban actress has been an actress for the past decade, more recently appearing in Hollywood movie projects like Blade Runner 2049 and War Dogs. Shell next pop up in Danny Boyles highly-anticipated Yesterday and Daniel Craig's upcoming flick Knives Out.

In Bond 25 she looks as if she's set to appear as a Bond girl. More details to come.

Lashana LynchCaptain Marvels Lashana Lynch is also joining Bond 25.

We dont know who she will be playing, but jumping from Marvel to Bond is not a bad franchise hop.

Billy MagnussenGame Nights Billy Magnussen hops genres and projects all the time. Hes done comedy, as evidenced. Hes also played princes in the likes of Into The Woods and the upcoming Aladdin and hes been involved in plenty of TV projects from Black Mirror to Tell Me A Story.

Now, hell be joining Bond 25. My vote is as a henchman. He just looks henchman-esque. Well have to wait and see though.

David DencikOur final entry so far is David Dencik, a Swedish actor known for The Snowman and TVs Rig 45 and Quicksand.

Hell be joining Bond 25 in a currently unnamed role.

As for rumors about Bond 25, there have been some suggestions the movie will also bring back returning characters like Blofeld back to wrap up this era of 007. Well be sure to confirm as soon as Barbara Broccoli and the studio does. For now please put this one squarely in the rumor mill.

Daniel Craig has had an action-packed run a 007 since his debut in Casino Royale in 2006, but as all the Bonds before him, he cannot keep the role to himself. In the upcoming Bond 25, his final mission is said to involve genetic warfare set in motion by Rami Maleks villain character.

Fleabag and Killing Eve writer Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who recently joined the project to work on the scripts latest draft was reportedly brought in to help make the films elaborate premise regarding genetic engineering be more accessible to audiences, per Daily Mail. In fact, Bond 25 producer Barbara Broccoli told the site that Daniel Craig insisted she come on board.

The British comedy writer joined Bond 25 a couple months ago by Daniel Craigs request to bring her hilarious brand of wit and quirkiness to the screenplay already with Bond writers Neal Purvis and Robert Wade, Bourne Ultimatums Scott Z. Burns and director Cary Joji Fukunagas name written on it.

Along with Phoebe Waller-Bridges penning in her additions to the script, the plot focusing on genetic warfare apparently has Rami Malek brainstorming with genetic experts about his new role before Bond 25 soon picks up filming.

Soon after the movie began shooting in Jamaica in late April, Daniel Craig suffered an ankle injury on set which he had to undergo a minor surgery for. The actor is expected to have finished his recovery since his stated two weeks of recovery time has recently passed.

Villains turning to genetic engineering to carry out their plans are no stranger to blockbusters since franchises including Jurassic World, X-Men, Spider-Man, Blade Runner and Star Trek have all utilized the science as a plot point to formulate their most iconic characters.

It will be interesting to see how how the franchise approaches this in Bond 25, especially since 007 wont likely deal with it the same way these sci-fi/fantasy films have in the past. Bond villains are notorious for elaborate schemes, but Craigs Bond lives in a much more grounded and realistic world. Well have to wait and see how the Bohemian Rhapsody Oscar winner brings to the legacy of villains.

Now genetic warfare and Phoebe Waller-Bridge doesnt exactly come to mind as a obvious pair, but its smart that Bond 25 is enlisting a tried and true writer with comedic chops to buff up the script. If the films story is as complicated as they make it out to be, it should benefit from fresh eyes, and in her case she can perhaps make a bit of fun of it as well.

Along with Daniel Craigs final return, Bond 25 features an impressive cast including Ralph Fiennes as M, Naomie Harris as Eve Moneypenny, Ben Whishaw as Q, Lea Seydoux as Dr. Madeleine Swann, Rory Kinnear as Bill Tanner, Jeffrey Wright as Felix Leiter. Billy Magnussen, Lashana Lynch and Ana de Armas are also newcomers to the franchise.

Bond 25 hits theaters on April 8, 2020.
