Avengers: Infinity War Had Cut Scenes With Hulk And Black Widow

Spoilers ahead for Avengers: Endgame

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has been going strong for over a decade, so moviegoers have been privy to a variety of different plotlines. And while some proved to be instrumental throughout the last 22 movies, others fizzled out. And one of the storylines that fits into the latter category was Black Widow's romantic connection to Bruce Banner, as well as her ability to help tame The Hulk.

While Natasha's message to Banner briefly popped up in Thor: Ragnarok, their interpersonal dynamic wasn't really addressed in Infinity War or Endgame. But it that wasn't always the case, and writers Stephen McFeely and Christopher Markus recently explained the choice to abandon that plot line. As McFeely put it:

We certainly tried to. In Infinity War we have scenes wrote em, shot em of them sort of hashing that out. Youve been gone, Ive moved on that kind of stuff. It became very clear that if a scene was not on the A plot, it could not survive Infinity War. That thing has to be on rails just to get to the finish line. You couldnt wrap up loose threads just because you wanted to.

Well, that's interesting. Because while Natasha and Bruce shared scenes in the last two Avengers movies, their relationship seemed purely friendship. And now it seems we could have gotten a more fleshed out version of their interaction, before it was eventually cut for time.

Stephen McFeely's comments to Empire make a great deal of sense, as he and co-writer Christopher Markus has a ton of material to cover with Infinity War and Endgame. They were tasked with balancing a behemoth cast, and servicing the MCU's countless characters. So some ideas ended up cut.

Black Widow's relationship with Bruce Banner was played out across The Avengers and Age of Ultron. The two had clear chemistry, although the big Green Guy was the dark cloud hanging over their connection. But Bruce's feelings for Natasha were strong enough that she could calm Hulk's rage, and allow his genius alter-ego to gain control of their shared consciousness.

But Infinity War simply didn't have enough time to address this relationship, especially as the two characters hadn't shared any scenes in quite some time. Instead, they had an almost silent reunion, without any long scenes or tears shed. You can check out the scene in question below:

If there's one thing that Anthony Mackie's Falcon is known for, it's cracking jokes in the wake of the MCU's highs takes. That's certainly what Sam Wilson did as Bruce and Natasha shared their meaningful glance-- the only time their past was truly recognized in Infinity War and Endgame.

While their romantic relationship was cut for time, Nat and Bruce did get to share some solid scenes, especially in Avengers: Endgame. They were cracking jokes during the early stages of Time Travel experimentation, before Iron Man eventually showed up to stabilize the process. And Professor Hulk no longer needed the big green guy to be wrangled, as Bruce finally merged his consciousness with the physical prowess of his doppelganger.

Since Hulk and Black Widow's relationship was cut from Infinity War, we'll never see it played out again. Because while Hulk made it out of Endgame with a serious injury, Natasha sacrificed herself for the Soul Stone. As for the future, Phase Four remains a mystery.

Avengers: Endgame is in theaters now. Be sure to check out our 2019 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.

Mission: Impossible Fallout Has A Surprising Connection To The Series' First Film

Mission: Impossible Fallout Has A Surprising Connection To The Series' First Film

The following contains spoilers for Mission: Impossible - Fallout.

While the more recent Mission: Impossible films have all had some vague connections to each other, it often seems the earlier movies have been forgotten. Which made one moment in Mission: Impossible - Fallout a bit surprising. It turns out the role played by Vanessa Kirby in Fallout, that of an information broker called the White Widow, is actually the daughter of another famous Vanessa from Mission: Impossible's past, that of arms dealer Max, played to perfection in the original film by Vanessa Redgrave. Our own Sean O'Connell got to speak with Vanessa Kirby about playing this unique role. It turns out that more than just the plot thread connected the two characters, as Kirby said she used Vanessa Redgrave's performance in the first film to inform her own character in Mission: Impossible - Fallout. According to Kirby...

I really wanted to watch Vanessa and see what I might have inherited from her...She was playing someone dangerous but she wasn't playing dangerous if you know what I mean, she just was. And someone in that position of power, running that kind of criminal network with all those guys with guns back at your house, you don't need to... act powerful, you just sort of are, and that was a very interesting character trait to play.

The reference is a brief one and it's entirely possible that you could miss it, but when Tom Cruise's Ethan Hunt infiltrates a party being thrown by the White Widow, he first lays eyes on her while she's giving a speech. She's talking about her mother, a woman who clearly spent her life doing less than savory things, but it's clear everybody in this room knows who she's talking about. A woman with the unusual name of Max. However, if you've been watching Mission: Impossible movies from the beginning, you know Max. She was an arms dealer who was able to turn an IMF agent and tried to use him to get her hands on a list of undercover operatives. When Ethan Hunt is accused of being the bad agent, he ends up using Max in an attempt to figure out who the rogue agent actually is.

Beyond simply drawing a connection between these two characters, Mission: Impossible: Fallout also goes a step further and changes one's perspective of Max. According to the White Widow's speech, while Max certainly made her living on the wrong side of the law, she apparently did so with only good intentions. The money that she made selling weapons she used to support good causes in an attempt to turn the world away from the sorts of things she made her living doing. It puts an interesting twist on the character and makes liking her as much as you do in the first Mission: Impossible feel a little less wrong.

Check out Vanessa Kirby's full comments in the video below.

Why Jai Courtney Signed On For His Alita: Battle Angel Cameo

Why Jai Courtney Signed On For His Alita: Battle Angel Cameo

Alita: Battle Angel was a movie with a lot of ambition. It was a grand film with a huge budget that was designed very much to be the first film in a franchise. It was a movie so big that some of the film's biggest names had little more than cameo roles. One of those cameos was played by Jai Courtney. The role is so small that you'd be forgiven for missing it entirely, but the actor says that he was happy to do it simply because Robert Rodriguez was the man who asked him. According to the actor, he agreed to do it after getting a call from the director who told him...

There's this role, it's a little small on paper, but if this thing blows up, I'll need someone who I can rely on when we revisit it. And I was like, 'Fuck man, of course!' For Robert Rodriguez, I'm going to go down there and do it.

It seems that Jai Courtney had read for a couple of different roles in Alita: Battle Angel but, while he and Rodriguez wanted to work together, it seemed Alita wasn't quite the right time. However, Rodriguez then turned to Courtney when he needed somebody to fill the role of Motorball star Jashugan.

It seems that while Courtney's role was tiny in Alita: Battle Angel, the idea is that there is more to the character that we would see when and if sequels to the movie ever happen.

Of course, at this point, it's difficult to tell if a sequel is a real possibility or not. Alita struggled domestically, only bringing in about $85 million, but it did much better overseas and has a total gross of just over $400 million.

That a solid total number, but due to the film's fairly expensive budget, it's been suggested the movie needed to hit $500 million to be profitable, and it's clearly well below that mark. There's clearly an audience who got behind Alita, but it just may not be quite big enough. Although, one assumes that sequels could potentially be less expensive to produce since much of the technical groundwork has been done, so perhaps follow ups are possible.

Although, the other issue is that the first movie was a Fox production, which means that any subsequent movies would have to get the green light by Disney, which means convincing an entirely new set of executives to make your movie.

Courtney tells Business Insider that he has no clue what the future might hold for Alita and that he has zero expectations in that regard. It seems he didn't take the role for the sequel potential, but just to work with Robert Rodriguez, though one assumes if the sequel does happen he'll be even happier to have the chance to work with Rodriguez again.

Jai Courtney wasn't the only brief cameo that clearly was inserted because of future potential. Edward Norton also appeared in the film, as the man one assumes will be the main antagonist of any future movies.

In the modern movie landscape the franchise is king, and so a project like Alita was clearly always meant to be the first of many. Having said that, the movie practically requires a sequel simply because of the way it ended. It didn't simply leave the possibility of more story open, it left its own story before it was over.

It will be interesting to see if these cameos will ever get a chance to be fulfilled, or if these appearances in Alita: Battle Angel will just be interesting moments of trivia in a franchise that never happened.

The Last Jedis Rian Johnson Really Loves First The Rise of Skywalker Trailer

Unofficially, there seems to be a war between those who support Star Wars: The Last Jedi and those who are embracing Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. With J.J. Abrams returning to the fold as co-writer and director of this new film, it felt to some like a bit of a rejection of the bold new direction that Rian Johnson had brought his Star Wars film towards. Those feelings are invalid now, as Johnson himself saw the trailer for the ninth episode of the Skywalker Saga, and shared the following rave review:

Its hard to argue with a statement like that, as Rian Johnson is as much of a Star Wars fan as J.J. Abrams is. While some may have thought that Abrams return would look radically different from Johnsons middle installment of this third act trilogy, the trailer to Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker looks like it fits nicely into the trajectory that the previous film already set up.

Whats also nice to know is the admiration between these two directors is mutual, as earlier today J.J. Abrams handed out a very special thank you to Rian Johnson, in particular for hiring actor Kelly Marie Tran. This comes after Johnson commented on how hes actually interested to see what J.J. Abrams does with the Star Wars universe in his latest film, even if it happens to retcon pieces of The Last Jedi in order to close this portion of the series.

Though its not like Rian Johnson isnt heading back to that galaxy far, far away himself. Much as Abrams came back for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Johnson will be making more magic in the franchise himself. As previously reported, Rian Johnson is still on track for the trilogy of Star Wars films that take place outside of the Skywalker Sagas episodic structure. When exactly thatll take place is in question, particularly in the light of the hiatus recently announced by Disney CEO Bob Iger. But at least for now, as exhibited in his Twitter feeds latest output, Johnson is still very much on board for whatever comes next.

Star Wars fans, as any fandom at its best behavior, lift each other up in the name of their appreciation of the series. Now that both J.J. Abrams and Rian Johnson have provided a bridge between their theoretical halves of the property, its up to the fans of both directors to meet in the middle, as they await this next and last chapter of the classic story arc to come to a close.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker heads to theaters on December 20. However, if youre looking for some movie excitement to tide you over until then, head to our 2019 release schedule to get a jump on this years biggest debuts.

That he's going to right the wrongs of the blasphemous Rian Johnson. That The Rise of Skywalker will retcon and "fix" whatever happened in the highly polarising eighth episode of the Star Wars franchise. These aren't my words.
