Bumblebee Has Screened, Here Are The Early Reactions

One of the biggest questions surrounding Bumblebee is whether it can put the Transformers franchise -- which has released some real stinkers over the years -- back on track. The movie has officially screened for critics and the consensus is largely the same: Bumblebee is good! Critics have taken to social media to praise what many call the best Transformers film, which is an '80s throwback is filled with heart, humor, and solid action.

Bumblebee is something of an origin film following the popular yellow Autobot as he finds himself stranded on Earth. He soon meets Charlie (Hailee Steinfeld), who develops a close bond with Bumblebee as she tries to protect him from government agents and Decepticons looking to destroy him. Critics have had no problem saying that this is the best Transformers, highlighting its performances and sense of heart.

Travis Knight took over directing duties for Michael Bay on this film, and as such, the film is a little less explode-y. Knight brings an entirely different aesthetic to Bumblebee, redesigning the Transformers to resemble their Generation 1 (or G1 as fans call it) designs. One critic wrote that they want to see more Transformers films like this one.

While Bumblebee may be the main character, the core of the film is the bond between the robot and Charlie. Hailee Steinfeld is getting plenty of praise for her role in the film, with at least one critic saying that she elevates every scene she is in.

Finally, the film is set in the 1980s, something that the movie uses to great effect. Not only does it feel like a cross between E.T. and Iron Giant, but the movie also boasts a soundtrack filled with music of the era, with an emphasis on The Smiths.

It sounds like Bumblebee is well worth the price of admission and is a refreshing change of pace for Transformers fans. The movie is all set to release in theaters on December 21 and you can find out more about the movie with our handy guide.

No, Ryan Reynolds and Michael Bay Arent Doing A ThunderCats Movie

Yesterday we heard one of the most bizarre film rumors in recent memory. It claimed that the new Netflix movie currently being directed by Michael Bay and starring Ryan Reynolds, Six Underground, was actually a Thundercats movie that was filming in secret. It seemed far too crazy to be real, and now we know that it actually was. Rhett Reese, who co-wrote Six Underground with his Deadpool collaborator Paul Wernick, took to Twitter to respond to this odd rumor with a single word which clears things up.

So that pretty much spells it out. It's not exactly shocking that this rumor turned out to be false. It seemed crazy from the start. Of course, that certainly leads one to ask how the heck such an off the wall rumor got started. While an anonymous source was cited for the original rumor, IGN Middle East, called the source "reliable." Since it turns out the information was maybe not so reliable, what happened? Oftentimes when rumors turn out to be untrue they are still based on something real, so does that mean there really is a Thundercats movie in development, or about to start filming? Maybe something really is happening, but not with Michael Bay or Six Underground. Maybe Six Underground really is a cover for an entirely different movie, but just not Thundercats. Or maybe the "reliable" source got fed some really bad info just to see if it ended up online.

I wonder if that latter scenario might be the correct one. It wouldn't be the first time that somebody fed bad information to somebody they thought was a leak in order to confirm the suspicion. When the news ends up online you know who provided it and you don't lose out on anything since it was all bogus. Whoever provided the info to the source would also potentially be in a good position to make it seem real even though it was not. If that's the case, this reliable source may not be around much longer.

Still, as wild as this whole thing sounded, there are almost certainly a lot of people who will be disappointed to learn that none of it is real. The Thundercats are a property that still has a devoted fan base, one that is passionate enough to get bent out of shape when animation styles change drastically for entirely new versions of the cartoon.

On the plus side, Six Underground sounds like a solid movie in its own right, so hopefully, we can all enjoy the movie we're getting and not worry about the one that will likely never happen.

Patrick Wilson Loved His Last Minute Aquaman Costume Change

In Aquaman, Patrick Wilson plays King Orm, the Ocean Master and Arthur Curry's half-brother who is the main antagonist of the film. If you've seen the trailers, you know that Orm gets to wear some really badass-looking Atlantean armor over the course of the movie. One of those costumes underwent a last minute change that Patrick Wilson really loved, as he explained:

You want to move fluidly and swim and we found that you couldn't really see the arms a lot when you got these big shoulder armor on. So we put these tracking marks on there, thinking 'Oh, they'll put them on in post' and they actually didn't, which I think is kind of cool. I keep forgetting to tell James about this. So we're left with just this sort of chest plate that wasn't the original design but I think they just liked seeing the shoulder movement cause it helped sell the swimming aspect of it.

Patrick Wilson was wearing practical costumes for his role as King Orm in the film, and by and large they allowed him to move freely. But once the armor came on, in particular the shoulder pads, his movement became limited-- making it difficult to mime swimming. So as Patrick Wilson told CinemaBlend's own Sean O'Connell in an exclusive interview at the Aquaman junket, to compensate for that, they just put tracking marks on instead of the shoulder pads.

The assumption was that the shoulder armor would then be added digitally in post, but they ultimately decided not to. Although this went against the film's original design for his character, Patrick Wilson loved this choice and thinks that it was probably done because it makes the swimming look better.

The actors were suspended by wires and swam through air for the swimming in this film, so it is not real swimming. By having his shoulder's unobscured by shoulder pads, physical or digital, Patrick Wilson was able to not only move freely, but you can actually see the range of his movement. The end result makes the swimming look more natural and real. And for a movie called Aquaman, it is important that the swimming was up to par.

It would be interesting to hear if what Patrick Wilson surmises is the actual reason that the shoulder armor was not inserted digitally, or if it was a happy mistake. Whatever the reason, it seems that they went with a less is more approach for Orm's costume in the film. This is a choice Patrick Wilson, who is no stranger to superhero costumes after playing Nite Owl in Watchmen, is on board with.

There is also something to be said for a villain that isn't necessarily covered in armor and a hulking brute, but is instead lithe and strong. It's a more minimalistic approach, and still coming off as imposing and deadly.

It also in a way makes him look more like Aquaman himself, and shows Orm doesn't doesn't need all these advantages to be the hero's physical equal and rival in combat.
