Respected Star Wars Author Timothy Zahn Opposes Killing Off Major Characters

The new Star Wars trilogy has been met with a variety of different opinions so far, but one man who knows a thing or two about Star Wars has strong opinions about one trend we've seen in the new films. Each episode has given us the death (or at least the apparent death) of a major character. Timothy Zahn is the man who launched the Star Wars expanded universe with his Heir to the Empire trilogy and the author who is back writing Star Wars novels today says he doesn't think Star Wars films should kill major characters because the precedent has already been set not to do so, and that Star Wars movies should send the audience home happy. My philosophy before the sequels came out was that Star Wars was not the kind of thing where you killed off major characters. My logic on that one being if that was, we kill off major characters, either Wedge or Lando would not have survived the second Death Star [in Return of the Jedi]. It always seemed to me, this is the type where the heroes get into danger and you have to, they have to figure out a way out of it that you'll be happy at the end.

It's been said before that originally, it was conceived that either Lando or Wedge, or possibly both, were not supposed to survive their attack on the Death Star. However, at some point, the story was changed to give the trilogy a happier ending. It's certainly true that generally speaking, Star Wars movies have happy endings, although it's hard to say everybody went home happy from The Empire Strikes Back or Revenge of the Sith. Both of those films had fairly downer endings.

The current Star Wars trilogy, however, has had no fear when it comes to killing off characters. Han Solo died at the end of Star Wars: The Force Awakens and from all outward appearances, Luke Skywalker also perished at the end of Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

So how would Timothy Zahn have approached a new trilogy? He tells SyFy Wire he would have solved the problem of what to do with the original trilogy characters by simply not putting them in these movies.

My vision always for the sequels would be, you would pick up with the children of our main characters. [The original cast] would be the elder statesman type and not necessarily die on camera. They'd be off doing beekeeping like Sherlock Holmes allegedly did. You don't have to kill off a character to get them offstage.

Sherlock Holmes is a pretty good example. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle once tried to kill off his famous character, only to be met by fan backlash which resulted in the author bringing Holmes back to life. Rian Johnson can probably relate.

While Timothy Zahn's idea would certainly have the benefit of keeping the original trilogy characters alive, the downside of it is that we wouldn't have seen them in the movies, which likely would have also upset some fans. With so many people being Star Wars fans, it's going to be impossible to meet the expectations of all of them. However, I'd guess that Star Wars Episode IX is very interested in doing whatever it can to send everybody home happy.

Sequels are practically a given for any movie that does well at the box office and it when it comes to superhero blockbusters starring popular characters, sequels absolutely are a given. However, it seems that the upcoming Wonder Woman 1984 isn't really a sequel. At least, not according to the team that's making it. [Patty Jenkins] was just determined that this movie should be the next iteration of Wonder Woman but not a sequel. And shes definitely delivering on that. Technically speaking, a sequel is a story that's designed to continue the story that was started in an earlier work. Wonder Woman 1984 will continue to tell the story of Wonder Woman in as much as the movie will deal with the same main character, but it seems the idea here is that this movie won't really be connected to the first in any meaningful way.

Since the new Wonder Woman movie will take place decades after the first, and still a few decades before the events of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, the movie is set in a good place to tell a stand alone story. We can expect some similarities between the two films, but it sounds like the plan is to make something a bit different in every way.

Of course, we know there will be some connections to the first Wonder Woman film. If nothing else, we know that Chris Pine will be in the movie as Steve Trevor. While we don't know the how or why of that, his appearance is certainly an intentional call back to the first film.

It's not all that surprising to see that Wonder Woman 1984 is being looked at as its own movie. DC has clearly found more success in making standalone movies rather than trying to tie everything together into a single universe. It seems that even goes for two films starring the same character.

Charles Roven's comments to Vulture, at least theoretically mean that even the few people that missed Wonder Woman will probably be able to drop right into Wonder Woman 1984 without missing a beat. If it's not really a sequel then watching the first movie shouldn't be required to enjoy the story of the new film.

We can judge that for ourselves when Wonder Woman 1984 hits theaters in the summer of 2020.





However, according to at least one producer working on the film, fans shouldn't really see Wonder Woman 1984 as a proper sequel. See What Ryan Reynolds Would Look Like As The Flash

There are few marriages between actor and comic book character more perfect and destined than Ryan Reynolds and Deadpool. However, although we now view Ryan Reynolds as the definitive big screen version of the Merc with a Mouth, there is another superhero that he would have also been ideal for and one that he once wanted to play: the Wally West Flash. It's unlikely that this will happen now given the success of Deadpool and that the DC universe still has to flesh out the Barry Allen Flash, but it's still fun to imagine Ryan Reynolds as the wise-cracking speedster. Or better yet, instead of imagining, take a look at what Ryan Reynolds would look like as the Flash:

As always, BossLogic does a great job capturing and exceeding our imaginations with this image. Ryan Reynolds would be perfectly suited to play Wally West largely because of his personality, but this shows that he could look the part too, although I expect it might take a while to get his hair that long. Like all superheroes, Wally West's look has changed over the years, but this is one of his more distinctive looks with the hair out and the big ear wings echoing his Kid Flash costume. The suit looks really cool too (modeled after what he's worn in the Rebirth comics Era); it's very sleek and aerodynamic, and likely a huge upgrade from Barry Allen's makeshift suit in Justice League. Hopefully that onscreen Flash improves his suit over time now that he has that Bruce Wayne backing him. You can even see a little bit of a spark in Ryan Reynold's eyes in this image, hinting at the speed flowing through the fastest Flash.

Once upon a time, Ryan Reynolds would have been the perfect Wally West, as this image and any knowledge of the character makes clear. And perhaps if WB had tried to launch a universe with Ryan Reynolds as The Flash instead of Green Lantern, things might be very different. But as it stands, this picture is probably as close as we'll get to a Ryan Reynolds Wally West Flash. Ezra Miller, who is much younger than Reynolds, is currently playing the Barry Allen Flash in the DC films, and he hasn't even starred in his own solo film yet. So it will probably be a while before we get a younger Wally West for Barry Allen to mentor.

Despite all that, given the time travel shenanigans the Flash character often finds himself a part of, I suppose you can never say never about a Ryan Reynolds Wally West. Although considering the Deadpool 2 end-credits scenes, I'm guessing the actor won't be making that gamble again.
