How Much Ocean's 8 Could Make Opening Weekend

One of the hot button issues currently surrounding the entertainment world is proper inclusion and emphasis on female stories. And while the recent Ghostbuster had haters from the moment it was announced, Ocean's 8 is faring far better with the public. The heist comedy features an absolutely stunning cast of actresses, with cinephiles eager to see the likes of Sandra Bullock, Mindy Kaling, Sarah Paulson, and Rihanna onscreen together. While it should be interesting to see how the classic property is utilized with a new set of stars, how much money is Ocean's 8 capable of making? The first estimates have just come in for the film's opening weekend, and it's poised to have a seriously strong start at the box office.

The first predications for Ocean's 8's opening haul have started rolling out, which indicate that the upcoming blockbuster could make up to $45 million in its opening weekend. While other reports have it poised at a more modest $30M, Deadline maintains the all-star cast and early hype for Ocean's 8 may help it make some serious cash when it hits theaters.

While $45 million is nowhere near the massive haul that comic book movies like Avengers: Infinity War are able to accrue, it's a very strong number considering the budget of Ocean's 8. The film cost $70 million to make, so making back more than half the investment during opening weekend would be a win. If it ends up being a critical success and word of mouth starts spreading, Ocean's 8 could even more successful than we're anticipating. It all depends on how good the movie is.

So much of the success of movies depends on fan reaction. Twitter and Rotten Tomatoes have the ability to kill a movie before it even arrives in theaters, while getting positive attention early in the screeners will all but guarantee box office success. Ocean's 8 has a strong buzz surrounding it, so if it sticks the landing it could mean dollar signs for Warner Bros.

Luckily for Ocean's 8, folks don't seem all that upset that the franchise is getting an all-female spin. This is in stark juxtaposition to what happened with Ghostbusters. People were pissed about the idea of having a female team, and when the movie's first trailer failed to deliver on laughs, Ghostbusters was essentially DOA. The Ocean's franchise has already been rebooted once, so the public seems a bit more happy to pass off the property to a group of kickass ladies. And with the talent to back it up, people do seem excited for what Ocean's 8 will bring to the table. In addition to the previously listed cast members, the movie also includes Anne Hathaway, Cate Blanchett, Helena Bonhman Carter, and James Corden.

Ocean's 8 will arrive in theaters on June 8, 2018. In the meantime, check out our 2018 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.
